Introduction

Vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid are frequently combined in topical antioxidant serums.

The combination isn't arbitrary.

Each ingredient has antioxidant properties of its own, but research suggests that combining them can provide advantages beyond simply putting three popular antioxidants into the same bottle.

In particular, ferulic acid has been studied for its ability to improve the stability of formulations containing L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol, while vitamin C and vitamin E can participate in complementary antioxidant systems.

Human research has also evaluated topical formulations containing all three ingredients for protection against biological changes caused by ultraviolet radiation.

So why are these three antioxidants commonly used together—and what does the research actually show?

What Does Vitamin C Do for Skin?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with several functions relevant to skin biology.

In topical skincare, the most extensively studied form is L-ascorbic acid.

L-ascorbic acid acts as an antioxidant and is involved in processes required for normal collagen synthesis. It has also been studied for its effects on pigmentation and photodamaged skin.

But L-ascorbic acid has an important limitation:

It is chemically unstable.

Its stability can be affected by formulation conditions, oxygen, light, temperature, and other factors. Modern reviews continue to identify stability and skin delivery as central challenges in formulating topical L-ascorbic acid.

This is one reason the complete formulation matters—not merely the percentage of vitamin C printed on the label.

What Does Vitamin E Do for Skin?

Vitamin E refers to a family of lipid-soluble compounds, with alpha-tocopherol being one of the most biologically important forms.

Unlike water-soluble vitamin C, vitamin E is lipid-soluble.

This allows the two antioxidants to operate in somewhat different environments.

Vitamin E can help protect lipid structures from oxidative damage, while vitamin C participates in aqueous antioxidant systems.

Their relationship is especially interesting because vitamin C can participate in the regeneration of oxidized vitamin E.

That creates an antioxidant network rather than three ingredients simply acting independently.

What Is Ferulic Acid?

Ferulic acid is a phenolic antioxidant naturally present in many plants.

In skincare, it has attracted attention for its antioxidant properties and particularly for its use alongside vitamins C and E.

A 2025 systematic review identified 18 human studies involving topical ferulic acid across several skin applications. However, the authors also highlighted important limitations in the literature, including small sample sizes, variation between formulations, limited population diversity, and a lack of robust randomized controlled trials.

So ferulic acid has meaningful research behind it—but we shouldn't turn that evidence into exaggerated claims.

Why Combine Vitamin C and Vitamin E?

Vitamin C and vitamin E have complementary chemical properties.

Vitamin C is water-soluble, while vitamin E is lipid-soluble.

This allows antioxidant activity to occur in different portions of the cellular environment.

More importantly, antioxidants don't necessarily work as isolated molecules.

When vitamin E reacts with free radicals, it can itself become oxidized. Vitamin C can participate in reactions that regenerate vitamin E to its antioxidant form.

This biochemical relationship provides a rationale for combining the two.

But formulation matters.

Simply putting vitamin C and vitamin E on an ingredient list does not guarantee that a finished product will reproduce results from a particular published study.

The forms, concentrations, pH, vehicle, stability, and delivery all matter.

Why Add Ferulic Acid?

This is where one of the most frequently cited studies on topical antioxidants becomes important.

Researchers evaluated a solution containing:

15% L-ascorbic acid

1% alpha-tocopherol

and then added:

0.5% ferulic acid

The addition of ferulic acid improved the chemical stability of vitamins C and E in the formulation.

The researchers also reported that the vitamin C + E combination provided approximately fourfold protection against solar-simulated radiation in their experimental model, while adding ferulic acid increased that protection to approximately eightfold based on measured endpoints including erythema and sunburn-cell formation.

That is where many of the claims surrounding the C + E + ferulic-acid combination originate.

But the result needs to be interpreted carefully.

Does That Mean Ferulic Acid “Doubles the Effectiveness” of Vitamin C?

No.

That's an important distinction.

The study reported approximately doubled photoprotection against solar-simulated irradiation under the experimental conditions tested after ferulic acid was added to the vitamin C + E formulation.

That is not the same as saying:

“Ferulic acid makes vitamin C twice as effective for wrinkles.”

or:

“Ferulic acid doubles collagen production.”

or:

“Your vitamin C serum works twice as well.”

Those conclusions would go beyond what the experiment demonstrated.

The more accurate statement is:

In a specific experimental formulation, adding ferulic acid improved antioxidant stability and increased measured protection against UV-induced damage.

That's still a meaningful result. It just doesn't need to be exaggerated.

Has the Combination Been Studied in Human Skin?

Yes.

A subsequent clinical study examined a stable topical formulation containing:

15% L-ascorbic acid + 1% alpha-tocopherol + 0.5% ferulic acid.

The formulation and vehicle were applied to separate areas of normal human skin for four days before exposure to solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation.

Researchers evaluated several indicators of UV-induced damage, including:

  • Erythema
  • Sunburn-cell formation
  • Thymine dimers
  • p53
  • UV-induced cytokine responses

The antioxidant formulation provided significant protection across the measured endpoints compared with vehicle.

The authors also specifically noted that the mechanism was different from sunscreen and that the antioxidant formulation would be expected to supplement sunscreen protection.

That distinction matters enormously.

Does Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Replace Sunscreen?

No.

A topical antioxidant serum is not a substitute for sunscreen.

Sunscreens are designed to reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the skin through absorption, reflection, scattering, or combinations of these mechanisms depending on the UV filters used.

Antioxidants work differently.

They can help address oxidative processes and downstream biological effects associated with environmental exposure.

The human study of C + E + ferulic acid explicitly described its mechanism as different from sunscreen and suggested that it could supplement the protection provided by sunscreen.

So the appropriate daytime strategy is not:

Antioxidant serum OR sunscreen.

It is:

Antioxidant skincare + appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Why Is L-Ascorbic Acid Stability So Important?

L-ascorbic acid can degrade over time.

As degradation progresses, the concentration of intact L-ascorbic acid available in the formulation can decline.

This makes stability particularly important when evaluating an L-ascorbic acid serum.

Ferulic acid is interesting because the foundational C + E + ferulic-acid study demonstrated improved chemical stability when it was incorporated into the antioxidant formulation.

But ferulic acid alone cannot solve every stability problem.

Stability also depends on:

  • pH
  • Solvent system
  • Oxygen exposure
  • Light exposure
  • Temperature
  • Other formulation ingredients
  • Manufacturing
  • Packaging
  • Storage

A serum doesn't become permanently stable simply because ferulic acid appears on its ingredient list.

Do All Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Serums Work the Same?

No.

This is one of the most important practical lessons from the research.

The well-known studies evaluated specific formulations at specific concentrations.

You cannot automatically take results from a formulation containing 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha-tocopherol, and 0.5% ferulic acid and apply them to every product whose ingredient list contains some form of vitamin C, some form of vitamin E, and ferulic acid.

For example, a product might contain:

  • A vitamin C derivative instead of L-ascorbic acid
  • A different form of vitamin E
  • Different concentrations
  • A different pH
  • A different solvent system
  • Different supporting ingredients
  • Different packaging

Those differences can affect stability, delivery, tolerability, and performance.

This is why skincare evidence should ideally be interpreted at both the ingredient level and the finished-formulation level.

What About 20% Vitamin C?

A higher L-ascorbic acid percentage does not automatically make an antioxidant serum superior.

Concentration is only one variable.

A well-designed topical vitamin C formulation must also consider skin delivery, pH, stability, tolerability, supporting antioxidants, and packaging.

The famous C + E + ferulic-acid research used 15% L-ascorbic acid, but that does not establish 15% as the only effective concentration or prove that every 15% formulation outperforms every formulation at another concentration.

Likewise, a higher percentage should not be interpreted as an automatic measure of product quality.

Formulation matters.

Does the Form of Vitamin C Matter?

Absolutely.

The foundational research we're discussing used L-ascorbic acid.

That distinction is important because products marketed as “Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid” may use a vitamin C derivative instead.

Vitamin C derivatives can have advantages, particularly in formulation stability and flexibility, but they have different chemical properties and evidence bases.

Therefore, research conducted with L-ascorbic acid should not automatically be presented as though it proves identical effects for every vitamin C derivative.

Can You Use Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Every Day?

For people who tolerate the formulation, topical antioxidant serums are commonly incorporated into a daily skincare routine.

But tolerance depends on the finished product.

L-ascorbic acid is commonly formulated at an acidic pH, which can cause stinging or irritation in some people.

Other ingredients and the overall vehicle can also influence tolerability.

If a serum causes persistent burning, redness, itching, or significant irritation, continuing to apply it simply because the ingredients have scientific evidence is not useful.

An effective skincare routine still needs to be tolerable enough to use consistently.

When Should You Apply Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid?

These antioxidant combinations are particularly logical in a morning skincare routine because much of the research surrounding them involves protection against oxidative processes associated with UV exposure.

A straightforward routine might be:

Cleanser → Antioxidant serum → Moisturizer if needed → Sunscreen

Again, sunscreen remains essential.

Using an antioxidant serum underneath sunscreen should be thought of as a complementary strategy, not an alternative form of SPF.

What Should You Look for in an Antioxidant Serum?

Instead of looking only for the words “Vitamin C” on the front of the package, ask several questions.

Which form of vitamin C is used?

If the research you're interested in concerns L-ascorbic acid, confirm that the formulation actually contains ascorbic acid, rather than assuming every vitamin C derivative has identical evidence.

What is the concentration?

Concentration matters, but it shouldn't be evaluated alone.

Which form of vitamin E is used?

Vitamin E exists in multiple forms and derivatives.

Does it contain ferulic acid?

Ferulic acid has a meaningful formulation rationale alongside L-ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol.

Is the formulation designed for stability?

Because L-ascorbic acid is oxidation-sensitive, formulation and packaging are particularly important.

Is the product fresh and stored appropriately?

Even a carefully designed antioxidant formulation can be affected by time and inappropriate storage.

The ingredient list is only part of the story.

Is Ferulic Acid Effective on Its Own?

Ferulic acid itself has antioxidant and biological activity and has been investigated in a variety of topical applications.

A 2025 systematic review identified human studies reporting effects involving erythema, pigmentation, hydration, elasticity, and texture. However, the authors emphasized that the evidence base has significant limitations, including small studies and wide variation in formulations.

That means ferulic acid shouldn't be reduced to merely a “vitamin C stabilizer.”

But its role in the well-studied C + E + ferulic-acid combination remains one of the most compelling reasons it is used in antioxidant skincare.

Are Three Antioxidants Automatically Better Than One?

No.

The number of antioxidants on an ingredient list isn't an efficacy score.

A formulation containing ten antioxidants isn't automatically superior to one containing three.

What matters is whether the ingredients are:

Present in meaningful forms and concentrations

Chemically compatible

Stable in the formulation

Delivered appropriately

Supported by relevant evidence

The reason vitamin C + vitamin E + ferulic acid is interesting isn't simply that there are three antioxidants.

It's that there is a specific biochemical and formulation rationale for combining them, supported by experimental and human research.

The Bottom Line

Vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid are commonly combined for good scientific reasons.

L-ascorbic acid provides water-soluble antioxidant activity and has an established role in skin biology.

Vitamin E, particularly alpha-tocopherol, provides lipid-soluble antioxidant activity and participates in a complementary antioxidant network with vitamin C.

Ferulic acid contributes antioxidant activity and has been shown in a specific formulation to improve the chemical stability of vitamins C and E.

Research using 15% L-ascorbic acid + 1% alpha-tocopherol + 0.5% ferulic acid has also demonstrated protection against several markers of UV-induced damage in human skin.

But that evidence does not mean every serum containing those three ingredient names is equivalent.

The concentrations, forms, pH, formulation, stability, packaging, and storage all matter.

And most importantly:

Antioxidant serums complement sunscreen. They do not replace it.
