Vitamin C is usually associated with the morning.
Apply vitamin C. Follow with sunscreen. Start your day.
That routine makes sense because topical vitamin C provides antioxidant activity that can complement daytime photoprotection.
But it has also created a misconception:
Vitamin C is a morning-only ingredient.
It isn't.
Vitamin C can also be used at night. And depending on the form of vitamin C, the formulation, and the rest of your skincare routine, nighttime can be a perfectly reasonable place for it.
The more important question isn't simply when you use vitamin C.
It's which form of vitamin C you're using—and what you're trying to accomplish with it.
Why Is Vitamin C Usually Used in the Morning?
Ultraviolet radiation and environmental exposure generate reactive oxygen species in skin.
Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant and can help neutralize these reactive molecules.
That makes it particularly useful alongside sunscreen during the day.
But vitamin C is not a sunscreen.
It doesn't replace broad-spectrum SPF, and its usefulness doesn't suddenly disappear when the sun goes down.
Vitamin C is also involved in processes associated with:
- Collagen synthesis
- Pigmentation
- Oxidative stress
- Photoaging
These biological processes aren't limited to daylight hours. Reviews of topical vitamin C describe antioxidant, anti-aging and antipigmentary activity in addition to its photoprotective role.
So there's no biological rule requiring topical vitamin C to be used exclusively in the morning.
Is There Any Special Benefit to Using Vitamin C at Night?
This is where we need to separate science from skincare marketing.
There isn't compelling evidence showing that vitamin C somehow becomes more powerful simply because you apply it at night.
Your skin does undergo circadian changes, and repair processes occur continuously, but that doesn't establish a universal rule that nighttime vitamin C works better than daytime vitamin C.
The practical advantage of nighttime use is different.
It gives you another opportunity to incorporate vitamin C into your routine—particularly if you prefer a formulation designed around a different form of vitamin C than your morning antioxidant serum.
And this brings us to an important distinction.
Not All Vitamin C Is L-Ascorbic Acid
When most people hear “vitamin C serum,” they're thinking about L-ascorbic acid.
L-ascorbic acid is pure vitamin C.
It is also the form with the most established history in topical-vitamin-C research.
But it presents significant formulation challenges.
L-ascorbic acid is:
- Water soluble
- Chemically unstable
- Sensitive to oxygen and light
- Generally formulated at an acidic pH for effective topical delivery
These characteristics are why properly formulated L-ascorbic acid serums require considerable attention to pH, stability, packaging and freshness.
Cosmetic chemists have therefore developed vitamin C derivatives with different physical and chemical properties.
One of them is Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate.
What Is Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate?
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate—often abbreviated THD Ascorbate, THDA or THDC—is a lipid-soluble derivative of vitamin C.
That is fundamentally different from water-soluble L-ascorbic acid.
Its lipophilic character makes it compatible with oil-based and anhydrous formulations and gives it different stability and penetration characteristics.
Recent literature describes THD Ascorbate as a lipophilic precursor of ascorbic acid with improved formulation stability compared with L-ascorbic acid.
This is one reason you'll often find THD Ascorbate in richer antioxidant serums, oils and nighttime formulations.
Is THD Ascorbate More Stable Than L-Ascorbic Acid?
Generally, yes—but “stable” doesn't mean indestructible.
L-ascorbic acid is notoriously susceptible to oxidation, particularly in aqueous formulations and in the presence of oxygen, light and certain other conditions.
Vitamin C derivatives were developed partly to overcome those limitations.
THD Ascorbate is considerably more formulation-friendly because of its lipid-soluble structure.
However, laboratory research has also demonstrated that THD Ascorbate can degrade under oxidative stress.
So describing it as more stable than L-ascorbic acid is reasonable.
Describing it as completely oxidation-proof would not be.
Does THD Ascorbate Penetrate the Skin?
Its lipid-soluble structure makes this an especially interesting question.
The stratum corneum contains a lipid-rich environment, which can make penetration challenging for highly water-soluble molecules.
A recent comparative laboratory study evaluated marketed formulations containing THD Ascorbate, L-ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate using a synthetic membrane model designed to approximate skin absorption.
Under those experimental conditions, the THD Ascorbate formulation demonstrated greater cumulative penetration than the other vitamin C formulations tested.
That's promising.
But it shouldn't be interpreted as proof that every THD Ascorbate serum penetrates human skin better than every L-ascorbic acid serum.
The finished formulation matters.
Concentration, vehicle, encapsulation, supporting ingredients and other formulation characteristics can all influence delivery.
Does THD Ascorbate Have to Convert Into L-Ascorbic Acid?
THD Ascorbate is a vitamin C derivative rather than free L-ascorbic acid.
Its cosmetic activity is generally discussed in connection with its ability to function as an ascorbic-acid precursor following enzymatic conversion.
But this is an area where skincare marketing sometimes moves faster than clinical evidence.
We have far more historical research directly investigating L-ascorbic acid than we have independently studying THD Ascorbate.
So it would be inaccurate to say:
THD Ascorbate is simply a better version of L-ascorbic acid.
The evidence doesn't establish that.
A more defensible conclusion is:
They are different approaches to topical vitamin C with different formulation advantages and different levels of clinical evidence.
What Does the Human Research on THD Ascorbate Show?
Human research is becoming more interesting.
A 2024 randomized, double-blind study evaluated 5% THD Ascorbate alone against 5% THD Ascorbate combined with another antioxidant, acetyl zingerone, over eight weeks.
The combination outperformed THD Ascorbate alone for several measured outcomes, including wrinkle severity, pigmentation and redness. Importantly, the study also illustrates why we should be cautious about attributing every benefit of a finished antioxidant formula to THD Ascorbate itself.
Another 2024 clinical study evaluated a serum containing THD Ascorbate plus acetyl zingerone for 12 weeks and reported improvements in pigmentation, fine lines, smoothness, firmness and elasticity. That study was open-label and evaluated the combination rather than THD Ascorbate in isolation.
There are also older human studies involving formulations containing THD Ascorbate.
For example, a double-blind split-face study used a formula containing 10% L-ascorbic acid plus 7% THD Ascorbate and reported clinical and histologic improvements in photodamaged skin compared with vehicle. Because both forms of vitamin C were present, however, the study cannot tell us how much of the effect came specifically from THD Ascorbate.
So the evidence is encouraging.
It is not yet as extensive or straightforward as the evidence often presented in marketing materials.
THD Ascorbate vs. L-Ascorbic Acid: Which Is Better?
There isn't a scientifically defensible universal winner.
They solve different formulation problems.
L-Ascorbic Acid
Advantages
- Pure, biologically active vitamin C
- Extensive history of topical research
- Strong evidence for antioxidant activity
- Research supporting collagen and pigmentation effects
Challenges
- Unstable
- Oxidizes relatively easily
- Requires careful formulation
- Acidic formulations can sting some skin types
THD Ascorbate
Advantages
- Lipid soluble
- Greater formulation flexibility
- Generally more stable
- Can be incorporated into anhydrous/oil-based products
- Emerging clinical evidence
Limitations
- Less independent clinical evidence than L-ascorbic acid
- Effects depend heavily on the finished formulation
- It should not automatically be assumed equivalent to the same percentage of L-ascorbic acid
The percentage numbers should not be compared directly.
A 20% L-ascorbic acid serum and a 20% THD Ascorbate serum are chemically different formulations.
“20% vitamin C” does not tell you everything you need to know.
So Why Make a Separate Night Vitamin C?
Because it allows a completely different formulation strategy.
Instead of taking an acidic, water-based L-ascorbic acid serum and simply writing NIGHT on the bottle, a nighttime formula can be designed around a lipid-soluble vitamin C derivative and an oil-based vehicle.
That can create:
- A different skin feel
- Different formulation stability
- A different delivery environment
- An alternative for people who don't want another acidic aqueous serum
- A way to incorporate vitamin C into an evening routine
The point isn't that vitamin C somehow knows what time it is.
The point is that the formulation itself is different.
Can You Use Vitamin C Both Morning and Night?
Yes, if your skin tolerates the products you're using.
But more isn't automatically better.
Someone already using a strong L-ascorbic acid serum every morning does not necessarily need another vitamin C product at night.
A nighttime vitamin C may make more sense for someone who:
- Prefers an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative
- Wants a richer nighttime formulation
- Finds acidic L-ascorbic acid uncomfortable
- Doesn't consistently use vitamin C in the morning
- Wants a different antioxidant formulation for the evening
Your routine should solve a problem—not simply accumulate active ingredients.
Can You Use Nighttime Vitamin C With Retinol?
Potentially, yes.
The idea that vitamin C and retinoids can never be used together is overly broad.
But tolerability matters.
Someone using an acidic L-ascorbic acid formula alongside a retinoid may experience more irritation simply because both can be challenging for sensitive skin.
A lipid-soluble vitamin C derivative does not require the same highly acidic formulation environment as L-ascorbic acid.
That can make it easier to incorporate into certain nighttime formulations.
However, introducing multiple active products simultaneously is rarely a good way to determine what your skin tolerates.
If you're using a retinoid, introduce additional products gradually.
Is Nighttime Vitamin C Better for Sensitive Skin?
Not automatically.
But the form and vehicle may matter considerably.
Some people find low-pH L-ascorbic acid serums irritating.
A THD Ascorbate formula doesn't require the same acidic environment, potentially making it an attractive alternative for someone who wants vitamin C but dislikes the sensation of a strong L-ascorbic acid serum.
That does not mean every THD Ascorbate product will be non-irritating.
The entire ingredient list still matters.
What About Vitamin C and Dark Spots?
Vitamin C has long been investigated for effects on pigmentation.
L-ascorbic acid can interfere with pathways involved in melanin formation, which contributes to its use in products targeting uneven tone and hyperpigmentation.
Emerging clinical research on THD Ascorbate-containing formulations has also reported improvements in pigmentation.
A recent randomized controlled study of a 30% THD Ascorbate antioxidant serum reported visible improvement in hyperpigmentation and photoaged skin over 12 weeks compared with a control moisturizer, although the tested serum contained additional ingredients and therefore should be interpreted as evidence for the finished formulation rather than THD Ascorbate alone.
Does Nighttime Vitamin C Replace Morning Vitamin C?
Not necessarily.
And we shouldn't pretend that it does.
For someone who tolerates a well-formulated L-ascorbic acid serum, morning application has a strong rationale because antioxidant activity complements daytime sun protection.
A nighttime THD Ascorbate serum offers a different way to use vitamin C, not proof that morning vitamin C is obsolete.
Some people may prefer one.
Some may use both.
Others may decide that one vitamin C product is plenty.
All three approaches can be reasonable.
What Should You Look for in a Nighttime Vitamin C Serum?
Start by looking beyond the words “Vitamin C.”
Check which form is actually being used.
If you're looking for an oil-soluble derivative, the ingredient list may contain:
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
Then consider the rest of the formulation.
A nighttime vitamin C product doesn't need fifteen additional trendy actives simply to justify its existence.
A focused formulation can combine vitamin C with ingredients chosen for the type of vehicle and experience the product is intended to provide.
The Bottom Line
Vitamin C is not a morning-only ingredient.
Morning use makes excellent sense because vitamin C's antioxidant activity complements sunscreen and daytime photoprotection.
But its biological relevance to collagen, pigmentation and oxidative stress doesn't stop at sunset.
A nighttime vitamin C serum can make sense when it uses a formulation designed specifically for that purpose.
THD Ascorbate is particularly interesting because it is a lipid-soluble vitamin C derivative with greater formulation flexibility and emerging clinical evidence for photoaging and pigmentation.
But it shouldn't be marketed as magically superior to L-ascorbic acid simply because it is newer or lipid soluble.
L-ascorbic acid remains the more extensively researched form of topical vitamin C. THD Ascorbate offers a different approach with different formulation advantages.
So the better question isn't:
“Should vitamin C be used in the morning or at night?”
It's:
“Which form of vitamin C and which formulation makes the most sense for my routine?”
And for some people, the answer may very well be both.
