Hyaluronic acid is in everything.
Serums, moisturizers, masks, eye creams, injectable fillers—and increasingly, products advertising multiple “molecular weights” of hyaluronic acid.
It is usually described as a powerful hydrator that attracts enormous amounts of water and makes skin look plumper.
That basic idea is directionally correct.
But topical hyaluronic acid is frequently misunderstood.
The hyaluronic acid naturally present inside your skin, the hyaluronic acid injected as a dermal filler, and the hyaluronic acid applied in a serum are not doing exactly the same thing.
So what can a topical hyaluronic acid serum actually do?
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid—also called hyaluronan or HA—is a naturally occurring molecule found throughout the human body.
In skin, it is an important component of the extracellular environment and has a remarkable affinity for water.
That ability to interact with water is why hyaluronic acid has become such a useful ingredient in topical skincare.
As skin ages, its distribution and production of HA change. Environmental factors associated with skin aging can also affect HA synthesis and degradation.
But applying HA to the surface of your face is not the same as replacing all of the HA naturally present deeper within your skin.
That distinction matters.
What Does Topical Hyaluronic Acid Actually Do?
Its most established cosmetic benefit is straightforward:
Hydration.
Topical HA helps increase water content at and within the superficial layers of the skin, depending on the molecular size and formulation being used.
Better-hydrated skin generally appears:
- Smoother
- Softer
- Plumper
- Less rough
- Less visibly lined
Clinical studies of topical HA formulations have reported improvements in skin hydration and elasticity.
This doesn't require HA to completely penetrate into the dermis.
Even HA that primarily remains near the surface can have useful moisturizing effects.
Is Hyaluronic Acid a Moisturizer?
This is where terminology gets confusing.
HA is primarily used as a humectant.
Humectants help attract and retain water.
A complete moisturizer, however, may contain several types of ingredients:
Humectants — help increase water content
Emollients — smooth and soften the skin
Occlusives — help reduce water loss
Barrier lipids — can help support the lipid structure of the stratum corneum
So a hyaluronic acid serum and a moisturizer don't necessarily perform the same job.
If your skin is dehydrated, HA can be extremely useful.
If your primary problem is a compromised lipid barrier and excessive water loss, HA alone may not address the entire problem.
That's why a hydrating serum can make your skin feel wonderful immediately but still not completely solve persistent dryness.
Does Hyaluronic Acid Actually Penetrate the Skin?
Sometimes.
But the answer depends heavily on molecular weight.
Hyaluronic acid is not one fixed-size molecule. Cosmetic HA can be produced across a very large range of molecular weights.
Generally, larger HA molecules penetrate less deeply.
High-molecular-weight HA tends to remain primarily at or near the skin surface, where it can form a hydrating film and help reduce water evaporation.
Smaller HA molecules can penetrate farther into the stratum corneum and epidermis.
Modern reviews of penetration studies consistently find that molecular size strongly influences how far topical HA travels into skin.
So the statement:
“Hyaluronic acid is too large to penetrate skin.”
is overly simplistic.
A better statement is:
The penetration of topical hyaluronic acid depends substantially on its molecular weight and formulation.
High vs. Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid
This is one of the more meaningful distinctions between HA ingredients.
High-Molecular-Weight HA
Larger HA molecules primarily remain near the surface.
That isn't necessarily a disadvantage.
Surface HA can:
- Bind water
- Form a hydrating film
- Improve skin feel
- Reduce water evaporation
- Temporarily make fine lines less noticeable
Low-Molecular-Weight HA
Smaller HA fragments can penetrate farther into the epidermis.
Studies using Raman spectroscopy and other techniques have detected lower-molecular-weight HA deeper in skin than larger forms.
That has led to considerable interest in combining multiple molecular weights in the same formulation.
The idea is logical:
larger HA for surface hydration + smaller HA for hydration within superficial skin layers.
But consumers should be careful about assuming that “10 molecular weights” automatically means a product is ten times better.
More varieties on the label do not necessarily equal better clinical results.
Can Hyaluronic Acid Reach the Dermis?
This is where the evidence becomes more nuanced.
Very large HA molecules generally do not penetrate deeply.
Some very small forms, however, have demonstrated considerably greater penetration in experimental models.
For example, research on approximately 2-kDa HA found penetration through the epidermal barrier and into the dermis in excised human skin.
A recent comprehensive review concluded that penetration generally increases as molecular weight decreases, while also noting substantial differences among experimental methods and formulations.
That means you shouldn't assume that every HA serum reaches the dermis simply because very-low-molecular-weight HA has done so under particular experimental conditions.
The exact HA used matters.
So does the formulation carrying it.
Does Hyaluronic Acid Reduce Wrinkles?
It can improve their appearance.
And that distinction is important.
When skin becomes better hydrated, it swells slightly and appears smoother.
Very fine dehydration lines can therefore become less noticeable.
That is a genuine cosmetic effect.
It is not the same thing as permanently rebuilding a deep wrinkle.
There is also clinical evidence suggesting that certain lower-molecular-weight HA formulations may do more than provide temporary surface hydration.
In a randomized study, women applied formulations containing 0.1% HA of different molecular weights around one eye and a vehicle control around the other.
All HA formulations significantly improved hydration and elasticity. The 50- and 130-kDa formulations also produced significant improvements in wrinkle depth after 60 days compared with the vehicle-treated side.
That's much more interesting than simply saying HA “plumps wrinkles.”
But it still doesn't make topical HA equivalent to a dermal filler.
Is a Hyaluronic Acid Serum the Same as Hyaluronic Acid Filler?
No.
Not remotely.
Injectable HA fillers physically place a hyaluronic-acid material beneath the surface of the skin.
That can create volume and alter facial contours.
A topical HA serum is applied onto the stratum corneum.
Even lower-molecular-weight forms that penetrate portions of the epidermis do not behave like an injected cross-linked dermal filler.
A serum can improve hydration, smoothness and the appearance of fine lines.
It cannot recreate the volumizing effect of injectable filler.
Can Hyaluronic Acid Actually Dry Out Your Skin?
You've probably heard this claim:
Hyaluronic acid pulls water from your skin when the air is dry, so it can actually dehydrate you.
This idea gets repeated constantly online.
The clinical evidence does not establish that topical HA inherently dehydrates healthy skin.
HA-containing topical formulations have repeatedly demonstrated improvements in skin hydration rather than dehydration.
That doesn't mean every HA serum will feel good on every person's skin.
A formulation can feel sticky, tight, irritating or insufficiently moisturizing.
And someone with very dry or barrier-impaired skin may need emollients, occlusives and barrier lipids in addition to a humectant serum.
But that's different from saying HA itself automatically “steals water from your skin.”
That claim is much stronger than the evidence supports.
Do You Have to Apply Hyaluronic Acid to Damp Skin?
Not necessarily.
Applying a hydrating serum to slightly damp skin can feel good and can easily be incorporated into a moisturizing routine.
But the internet has turned this into something approaching a rule:
Never apply hyaluronic acid to dry skin.
There isn't strong evidence showing that HA suddenly becomes dehydrating simply because the skin wasn't damp when it was applied.
The more important issue is the entire routine.
If your skin is dry, applying a moisturizer after a hydrating serum can help provide additional emollience and reduce water loss.
So rather than obsessing over whether your face is precisely damp enough, focus on building a routine that provides both hydration and appropriate moisture retention.
Is More Hyaluronic Acid Better?
No.
This is another example of skincare percentages becoming marketing tools.
HA can substantially alter the viscosity and sensory properties of a formula even at relatively low concentrations.
A product containing a higher percentage is therefore not automatically more hydrating or more effective.
The molecular weight, form of HA, supporting ingredients and overall formulation can all matter.
In fact, one randomized study found meaningful improvements in hydration and elasticity using formulations containing just 0.1% sodium hyaluronate.
So:
2% HA isn't automatically twice as effective as 1%.
And 1% isn't automatically ten times better than 0.1%.
Cosmetic formulation doesn't work that way.
Hyaluronic Acid vs. Sodium Hyaluronate
You may see Sodium Hyaluronate instead of Hyaluronic Acid on an ingredient list.
Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid and is extremely common in cosmetic formulations.
Both belong to the same HA family and are used for their water-binding and hydrating properties.
Seeing Sodium Hyaluronate rather than the words “Hyaluronic Acid” does not mean a product lacks HA-related functionality.
Who Benefits Most From a Hyaluronic Acid Serum?
HA can be useful for many skin types because hydration is not limited to people with visibly dry skin.
It can be particularly useful for:
- Dehydrated skin
- Tight-feeling skin
- Fine dehydration lines
- Skin lacking plumpness
- People using drying active ingredients
- People who want hydration without a very heavy product
Even oily skin can be dehydrated.
Oil production and water content are different things.
Someone can therefore have oily skin and still benefit from a lightweight humectant serum.
When Is HA Not Enough?

If your skin feels chronically:
- Dry
- Flaky
- Tight
- Irritated
- Sensitive
you may have more going on than simple dehydration.
The stratum corneum depends on an organized lipid matrix containing ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.
If barrier function is compromised, adding a humectant may help hydration without completely addressing water loss or lipid deficiency.
That's why HA and barrier lipids shouldn't necessarily be thought of as competitors.
They address different parts of the problem.
How Should You Use a Hyaluronic Acid Serum?
A straightforward routine is usually enough.
Morning:
Cleanse → Hyaluronic Acid Serum → Moisturizer → Sunscreen
Evening:
Cleanse → Hyaluronic Acid Serum → Moisturizer
If you're also using treatment products, the exact order can depend on the formulations involved.
You generally don't need an elaborate routine to get the hydration benefits of HA.
Consistency matters more.
What Should You Look for in an HA Serum?
Don't choose one simply because the front of the bottle advertises the largest percentage.
Instead, look at the overall formulation.
Useful considerations include:
- What form of HA is being used?
- Does the product combine HA with other humectants?
- Does it layer well with your routine?
- Does it provide hydration without excessive tackiness?
- Is the formula appropriate for your skin type?
A simple, well-formulated HA serum can accomplish its job without needing a long list of trendy active ingredients.
The Bottom Line
Hyaluronic acid deserves its reputation as an effective hydrating skincare ingredient.
But its benefits are often exaggerated or poorly explained.
The evidence supports topical HA for improving skin hydration, elasticity, smoothness and the appearance of fine lines, with molecular weight influencing penetration and potentially some of its effects.
Larger HA molecules primarily provide surface hydration.
Smaller HA molecules can penetrate farther into the skin, although penetration varies considerably with molecular size and formulation.
What HA does not do is act like an injectable dermal filler or permanently erase deep wrinkles.
And despite what is frequently repeated online, there isn't good evidence that HA inherently dries out skin simply because you applied it to a dry face.
The simplest way to think about it is:
Hyaluronic acid helps skin hold onto water.
For dehydration, that can be extremely useful.
For persistent dryness caused by barrier dysfunction, hydration may need to be paired with appropriate barrier support.
